Christy Speakman is a visual artist using photography, video, and installation to create environments that investigate the comprehensive natural phenomena of the cultural landscape. Growing up in New Orleans and Caribbean Honduras, a deep connection to the local landscape and its intuitive sense of ritual and discovery has had a profound influence on her development as an artist. Working with elements connected to the ground and sky- vapor trails, sidewalk cracks, rain puddles and oil slicks symbolically represent migration, expansion, and constant change, constructing a revised visual language to describe a contemporary sense of displacement. Speakman's work has been exhibited in New Orleans, the Czech Republic, New York, and in Sao Paulo, Brazil during Latin Month of Photography. She is the recipient of residencies from The Lower Manhattan Cultural Council, The Santa Fe Art Institute and The Middle European Colony of Contemporary Art, with grants from the Andy Warhol Foundation and the Joan Mitchell Foundation. Speakman holds a B.A. from the University of New Orleans and an M.F.A. in Photography from Ohio University in Athens, Ohio.
